neuromuscular TAPING

Riabilitazione Sportiva - Centro Medico Polispecialistico Porta a Terra, Livorno (LI)

NeuroMuscular Taping (NMT, NeuroMuscular Taping) is a technique that involves applying an elastic adhesive tape on the skin, with a direct local therapeutic effect as well as remotely by reflex.

Correct application can reduce pain and facilitate lymphatic drainage through the formation of skin folds.

Unlike traditional anaelastic and elastic taping, NeuroMuscular Taping technique (NMT), is based on the facilitation of cutaneous and muscular movements in order to obtain a therapeutic biomechanical effect on the treated areas. Muscles are one of the most important targets on which NMT acts, with indirect effects on venous and lymphatic circulation and body temperature.

The tape used for the NeuroMuscular Taping is a layer of a few millimeters thick cotton with wave-coated acrylic adhesive. The adhesive surface is protected by removable paper; and the tape has an elasticity that is superimposable to that of the skin. It is elastic only in length and resists water.

The application together with the movement of the body produces micromovements of the tape that stimulate the cutaneous receptors and those of the underlying layers, causing a reflex muscle response.

The tape is applied with varying degrees of tension that depend on the desired therapeutic effect and its special aerated wavy structure allows for local perspiration.

Acting on skin, muscles, venous system, lymphatic system and joints, the NMT achieves six main objectives:

  • Relieves pain;
  • Normalizes muscle tension;
  • Removes venous and lymphatic congestion;
  • Improves blood vasculature;
  • Corrects joint alignment;
  • Improves postural setting.

Consequently it acts at different levels:

sensitive

  • stimulation of cutaneous, muscular and articular receptors;
  • control of the painful stimulus;

muscular

  • restoration of the right muscle tone;
  • reduction of muscle fatigue;
  • increase in muscle contraction;
  • reduction of excessive distension of a muscle;
  • reduction of excessive muscle contraction;

lymphatic and blood

  • reduction of local inflammation;
  • increase in blood circulation;
  • improvement of lymphatic drainage;

articular

  • stabilization at the fascial level:
  • increase in the amplitude of the joint movement;
  • pain reduction

The NMT technique is to be used as an additional therapy to be included in both manual and instrumental therapeutic programs and can be used as a single tool. The application of NMT, offering continuous lymphatic and vascular benefits, can facilitate recovery in postoperative and traumatological situations. The tape used for the treatment can be applied for several days, does not contain any active ingredients and can be used on children, adults, the elderly, and pregnant women. NMT applications can reduce recovery time and increase fitness levels.
